Volunteers Wanted!

The Ottawa Police Service believes in Community Policing - solving community problems with the assistance of members of the community. Community Police Centres rely heavily on trained volunteers. Most of our volunteers assist at Centres in their neighbourhoods. They answer questions about the police service and crime statistics for their area. They may also run crime prevention programs depending on a community's needs. Individuals are selected on the basis of their ability to perform assignment requirements.

We need women and men who are at least 18 years of age, have no police records and are available for task training. A thorough screening process includes background and reference checks and an interview.

You can get involved as a prospective volunteer with the Ottawa Police Service by applying online for specific vacant volunteer opportunities. These volunteer opportunities will also be posted at our community police centres, in our main police stations and on the Volunteer Ottawa database. A detailed list of locations can also be found in the Red Pages of your telephone book. If there are no positions posted at the time of your inquiry, it simply means we currently have no openings. Check this page of the Volunteer Opportunities section of our Web site often.

If you are a successful volunteer candidate, the Ottawa Police Service prefers that your commitment be for a minimum of one year. We are looking for volunteers who can give us four hours a week of their valuable time. If you are hoping to become a volunteer to further your chances of becoming a police officer, you might rather consider community service at a social service agency
